The Long Beach Unified School District launched a year-long pilot project that allows students to use an iPad app for its first interactive algebra curriculum. The project started on the first day of school when the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt textbook publishing company, the local school board members and Bonnie Reiss, California Secretary of Education presented a class of eight graders of Washington Middle School their own personal iPads. It came with the Textbooks app that the publisher said is the most sophisticated way to use the interactive technology of the iPad in K-12 learning.

How the app works   
This awesome iPad app allows students to organize their PDFs and digital textbooks by dragging and dropping them into subjects or courses. Once they open a textbook, a student can navigate or swipe through the pages with the use of a filmstrip of thumbnails found at the top of the screen. This app also has a full text search and allows the bookmarking and highlighting of pages. Students can also add the pop out digital stickers from the margin.  The highlight feature is also very functional. A student can launch a Wikipedia or web search based on a highlighted word. Another outstanding feature is called a “WTF” or “Words to Friends” that allows students to send out study messages to classmates and friends on Twitter or Facebook.
